Announcing next year's musical....

Thoroughly Modern Millie

Directed by: Joseph Moser

Music Director: Mary Zimmer

Choreographer: Mary Zimmer, assisted by Karen Capoun

"Millie will be performed two weekends in 2009: Opening weekend is March 27th, Closing weekend is April 3rd through the 5th.

Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the timeless story of a young girl from "nowhere Kansas" moving to New York to find a new life for herself - to live the "modern" life.  Through a series of mishaps, misunderstandings, and danger, Millie finally comes to realize that what's most important is not the "modern" life, but truly loving someone and being loved in return.

Set in 1922, full of energetic, exciting Broadway Jazz music, Thoroughly Modern Millie won six Tony awards, including Best Musical and Best Actress (Sutton Foster).  "Millie" was originally a movie musical, starring Julie Andrews.  The stage musical follows the basic plotline of the movie, but has many added twists and subplots, and twice as many songs.

"Millie" is a HUGE dance show, with a great deal of tapping.  As such, tap classes will be offered this summer for anyone interested in learning.  Tap classes will run for five weeks at Cheer and Dance Express (Karen Capoun's studio, on 8th and Pioneers).  Classes will be Mondays, from 7:30-8:30.  These are the five Mondays of classes:

Monday, June 16th, June 23rd, July 7th, July 14th, July 21st.

(There will NOT be class on June 30th - the studio is closed the week of July 4th).

Classes are $5 a session - full payment must be made at the door on the evening of the first class.  This is a HUGE deduction from what normal classes cost, thanks to the generosity of Mrs. Capoun.  Total for the 5 classes is $25 - normal rate would be $60 ($12 per class).

SHOES: You are not required to purchase tap shoes for this tap class, although it will certainly help to learn the details of tap dancing and separating your sounds.  LADIES, if you are going to buy shoes, I would recommend going to discountdance.com and purchasing a cheap pair of tap shoes.  We will be using beige character shoes for "Millie", but if you want a cheaper shoe to learn in, choose a cheap flat tap - about $20.  I would wait to buy the character taps until  we determine exactly who will be doing the major tap numbers in "Millie".   GENTLEMEN:You do not have to purchase tap shoes.  If you do, purchase the cheapest pair on discountdance.com.   You may also come in hard soled dress shoes.  Try to find shoes with hard soles - sneakers won't help you learn the isolations of sounds that tap requires.
